What is Safety Glass?
Safety Glass is a phrase used to describe glass that, when
broken, provides a level of safety for people in the vicinity.
There are two types of safety glass.
Laminated Safety Glass is simply two pieces
of glass laminated together. The most common form is the 6.38mm
which is two pieces of 3mm glass with a sheet of plastic all
laminated together. It is used in Shop Front Windows, doors and
shower screens. Laminated Safety Glass, will break but the
glass will stay attached to the plastic.
Translucent Laminated Glass is exactly the same as laminated
glass only the plastic centre is translucent.
Toughened Glass, or 'Tempered Glass', has
been baked at tremendous temperatures making the glass 4 to 5
times stronger than normal glass of the same thickness.
Toughened Glass conforms to the Australian Standard 2208
Safety Glazing Material for use in Buildings and is commonly
found in Shower Screens, Balustrading, Oven doors and glass
table tops. When Toughened Glass is broken the glass shatters
into tiny, relatively harmless, pieces.
What is Starphire Glass?
Starphire Glass refers to glass that has had its iron
removed. The green tinge that is in most glass is caused by the
iron content. Low Iron glass is much clearer and makes it
perfect for colour reproduction in Splash-Backs.
How Do I Choose the Best Glass
for My Windows?
'Hack & Glaze' is the phrase used when Glaziers
re-glazing a window. Different glass is used depending upon the
size, the location and the appropriate Australian Standard .
Glass used in some window is float glass and bathrooms is
always A Grade Safety Glass, either Laminated or Toughened
Glass.
Which Glass is Best for My
Door?
Glass used in doors must be an A grade Safety Glass. Either
Laminated Safety Glass or Toughened Safety Glass. Your door
frame may only take a glass thickness of 5mm. In
that instant, then Toughened Glass would be used. While
Toughened Glass offers more variety of patterns, Laminated
Safety Glass can often be the best glass. In the event of a
breakage Toughened Glass will shatter and even though they are
relatively harmless you will have that hole until it is fixed.
Laminated Safety Glass when broken will still stay
together.
What is a Polished Edge
Glass?
A polished edge is a small chamfer on the top and bottom of
the glass giving a smooth, safe edge with a high gloss.
What is Bevelled Edge
Glass?
A bevelled edge is a tapering of the glass from the required
width in, to the edge of the glass. Bunbury City Glass can
order bevels from 10 to 30mm.
What Thickness Mirror Should I
Get?
Depending on the size, weight and price will all play a part
in your decision. As a general rule, unframed mirrors over 1
square meter (sqm) should be in 6mm silver, mirrors under this
size may be made from 4mm silver. For a variety of reasons you
may want to break this rule: Ie;
* 4mm silver is cheaper than 6mm.
* A 30mm bevel (see above) requires 6mm silver.
* A tall, thin mirror - 1600 x 400 would tend to bow with 4mm
silver giving a distorted reflection.
* 1sqm on 4mm is 10kg while on 6mm it weighs 15kg.
Feel free to give us a call and we'll be happy to advise the
best mirror for your purpose.
